I recently had a client ask me what the difference is between a posed set up and a wrapped set up. As a newborn photographer and expert in the field for many years, I sometimes forget that not everyone is familiar with what a Taco pose is or which pose is Potato sack. For me it is second nature by now after working with and photographing over 600 newborns in our Maryland newborn photography studio.
I wanted to take a few minutes to discuss the difference between our wrapped set-ups, posed set-ups, and prop set ups.
Let’s start with the most obvious one: Prop Set-ups!
NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY PROP SET-UPS
Prop set-ups involve a baby posed in or on a prop. We attempt to get babies unwrapped on props but we follow each baby’s lead and if baby is unsettled on a prop, we will attempt the prop wrapped to ensure they are happy and comfortable at all times. There are also some babies that just don’t like being in bucket pose or feel more comfortable in a crate instead and we always, always “listen” to our little subjects and follow their lead. We plan a certain prop for your session but use our years of expertise to quickly adapt to fit what your baby is telling us he or she prefers. Here are a few examples of what we would consider a “Prop Set-Up”.
Now, on to our posed set-ups.
NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY POSED SET-UPS
These are probably what most people think of when they think of traditional newborn portrait art. Baby is asleep and posed on a fabric background. This is the most time consuming part of the session as some babies can be a bit unsettled and take longer to settle into each pose. This is also the part of the session that can vary the most. Even more so than props, each baby will have their own way to settle into a pose. All of our precious little subjects are individuals with their own little personalities and preferences. Again, we meticulously plan out each posed set up and corresponding accessories, but we always listen to our sweet baby clients and ensure we pose them in a safe (safety is key!) and comfortable pose. Most babies will just keep on snoozing and having sweet baby dreams throughout this section, while some like a bit of extra cuddles.
And last, but not least, are our wrapped newborn set-ups.
NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY WRAPPED SET-UPS
Our wrapped set-ups are some of my very favorite set-ups. Baby is warm and calm and curled up inside of our high-end boutique wraps and placed in various backgrounds. Our Petite Newborn Session features exclusively wrapped set-ups. If we find one of our tiny friends is just too fussy or unsettled to pose, we do swap out extra wrapped set-ups in place of posed or prop set-ups to ensure they stay happy and calm during their session.
